Royal Cargo Cup Overall 1st Place

– ‘Emocean I’ (Owner: Michael Raeuber / Skipper: Philip Philip Schlohsnagel)

CMI Offshore Trophy Overall 2nd Place

– ‘Neptunus’ (Owner: Rick McGinegal / Skipper: Rick McGonegal)

Philippine Retirement Authority Trophy Overall 3rd Place

– ‘Shangri-la’ (Owner: Alfredo ‘Pong” Reyes / Skipper: Chris Gimenez)

Congratulations to ‘Emocean I’, ‘Neptunus’ and ‘Shangri-la’ for the overall victories in the Puerto Galera Yacht Club’s 20th Anniversary All Souls Regatta, the ASR2024, held November 1-3. The three days of racing took place on courses starting and finishing from Puerto Galera and across the Verde Island Passage to marks off Maricaban, ‘Balahibing Manok’ (Chicken Feather) and Verde lsland.

The fleet enjoyed the classic Puerto Galera sailing weather that has made Puerto Galera one of the Philippines most popular sailing destinations. From a slow start under clear blue skies, but with almost no wind, early on Friday morning following the exit of Super Typhoon ‘Leon’ from the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the prevailing Nor’Easterly Monsoon, known as the ‘Amihan’, settled in blowing at a steady 8 -10kts providing brisk sailing conditions for all.

Saturday saw the winds remain steady from Northeast and pickup to 12-15kts of long run across to Verde Island and Sunday provided a bit of excitement with a little of everything – steady winds and sunny skies, then a sudden short squall with heavy rain and gusts to 25kts halfway around the course to the Small Tabinay Mark, and then a fast return run back to the finish at Haligi Beach.

Winners in Class were:

Emocean I’ in 1st Place in Racing Class. They led the way across the finish line each day and despite a punishing handicap consistently sailed the fastest race on corrected time to win 1st Place in Racing Class as well Overall 1st Place. Alan Burrell’s ‘Sandoway’ followed in 2nd Place in Racing Class with Kevin Moylan’s ‘Irresistible’, skippered by Peter Stevens, in 3rd Place.

Neptunus’ took the honors in Performance Cruiser Class, with Steve Longmuir’s ‘Sbrae’ in 2nd Place and Oliver Scholer’s ‘Kambal’, skippered by Richard Gates, in 3rd Place.

In Classic Cruiser Class Adolfo “Pong’ Reyes’ ‘Shangri-La‘ took 1st place, followed by Heinz Buchler’s ‘Cape North’, skippered by Juergen Kirstein, in 2rd place and John Quirk’s ‘Columbus’ in 3rd Place.

In Multihull Class, Kareem McGill’s ‘Soniya’ won out over Sven Spiegelberg’s veteran ‘Rising Sun’ to take 1st Place, with Commodore Peter ‘Hughie’ Griffith’s ‘Camille’ following in a sedate 3rd Place.

Both Royal Cargo’s own ‘Emocean 1’ in Racing Class and Rick McGonegal’s ‘Neptunus’ in Performance Cruiser Class took 1st Place in class on each day of racing and were clear overall winners in class.

However, ‘Emocean 1’ lead the way across the finish line each day and despite a punishing handicap consistently sailed the faster race on corrected time to win Overall 1st Place and the 20th Anniversary ASR2024 ‘Royal Cargo Cup’… Congratulations to Michael Raeuber, skipper Philip Schlohsnagel and the Emocean 1’ crew on PGYC’s first 1, 2, 3 victory!!

‘Neptunus’ took Overall 2nd Place and the ‘CMI Offshore Trophy’ home while the award for 3rd place, the ‘Philippine Retirement Authority Cup’ overall is pending a protest.

Other class Overall 1st Place winners were Adolfo “Pong’ Reyes’ ‘Shangri-La’ in the Classic Cruiser Class and Kareem McGill’s ‘Soniya’ in Multihull Class. Second in class were Alan Burrell’s ‘Sandoway’ in Racing Class, Steve Longmuir’s ‘Sbrae’ in Performance Cruiser Class, JIhn Quirk’s ‘Columbus’ in Classic Cruiser Class and Sven Spiegelberg’s ‘Rising Sun’ in Multihull Class.

Day 2 of the Puerto Galera Yacht Club Royal Cargo ASR2024 opened to sunny skies and the Northeast ‘Amihan’ blowing at a steady 12-15kts across the Verde Island Passage with slight seas, exactly the premium sailing conditions that has made Puerto Galera such a popular yachting destination.

It was fast start out of Puerto Galera Bay with the ASR2024 fleet heading to Verde Island, then back to a mark off ‘Balahibing Manok’ (Chicken Feather) Island, at the entrance to Batangas Bay, before heading back to Puerto Galera to the Finish Line off Haligi Beach.

With brisk winds, fair skies and full sails the yachts set a vigorous pace around the 22kms course, challenging handicaps and old rivalries.

Royal Cargo’s ‘Emocean’ once again proved just too quick for Kewin Moylan’s “Irresistible’ and Alan Burrell’s ‘ Sandoway, who finished in 2nd and 3rd places behind ‘Emocean, in Racing Class. The Performance Cruisers sailed a close race with the first three yachts finishing within minutes of each other. Rick McGonegal at the helm of his JeanneauVoyage 12.50, ‘Neptunus’, lead the way across the line, with ‘S’brae’ and Kambal close behind.

In the Multihull Class, ‘Soniya’ and ‘Rising Sun’ battled it out in a race within the race, to see ‘Rising Sun’ take first place by just over one minute with a finish time of 3.31.10 to ‘Soniya’s 3.32.39… competitive sailing at its best!

Adolfo Pong’s ‘Shangri-La’ beat ‘Columbus’ across the line in the Classic Cruiser Class, with Cape North’ in 3rd place.

With Day 3 still to go and winds holding steady, there are still several contenders for the Royal Cargo Cup. Stay tuned for race results and for more information please contact 09175205874 or email clubhouse@pgyc.org

After the wild weather of the past two weeks, it was something of a disappointment to start Day 1 of the ASR2024 with little to zero wind. Never-the-less the fleet motored out to the Start/Finish Line off Haligi Beach and drifted rather than sailed across the line. But there was the promise of wind in the gathering of clouds to the Northeast and early afternoon saw sails filled and some serious sailing underway.

The Puerto Galera Yacht Club’s All Souls Regattas are known for their diverse and eclectic fleets and this, the 20th Anniversary of the event, was no exception. Classic Cruisers, Performance Cruisers, Multihulls and sleek Racers dotted the waters of the Verde Island Passage and tussled for advantage under blue skies and steady breeze.

Fittingly, Royal Cargo’s Swan 65 ’Emocean’ led the Racing Class across the line, with PGYC veteran racer ‘Sandoway’ in close pursuit. “Talang Gala took 3rd place.

With two more days of racing to go, the provisional results for Day 1 were:

Racing Class: 1st Place ‘Emocean’/ 2nd Place ‘ Sandoway’ / 3rd Place “ Talang Gala

Performqnce Cruiser: Princess Arieta / 2nd Place ‘Neptunus’ / 3rd Place ‘S Brae’

Classic Cruiser: 1st Place ‘Columbus’ / 2nd Place ‘Cape North’ / 3rd Place ‘Shangri-La’

Multihull: 1st Place ‘Soniya’ / 2nd Place ‘Rising Sun ‘/ 3rd Place ‘Camille’

The Asia Tigers Trophy for Overall 1st Place was awarded to the Classic Cruiser and PGYC veteran ‘Columbus’.

Tomorrow’s racing on Saturday, November 02, promises to be much more lively with 15kt winds and the courses set for Verde island. For more information contact 09175205874 or email clubhouse@pgyc.org.

Three young sailors from the Puerto Galera Yacht Club’s Small Boat Program (SBP) competed in Manila over the weekend for selection to represent the Philippines at Macau MGM International Dinghy Regatta 2024 that takes place in the Chinese casino capital later this month.

Last year PGYC’s Raya Mithi Samson took first place and went on to compete in Macau, finishing fifth in an International field of young sailors from across China and the rest of Asia. This year Raya and fellow SBP sailors, Genmarck Daenniel Maranan and Acevhen Abanilla, did their best over the ten elimination races, but lost out to the Philippine Sailing Association’s (PSA) Carlstein Jade Dulay who consistently finished in the top three in each race to take 1st place overall and will go on to represent the Philippines in Macau. Congratulations Jade and wishing you all the best in Macau!

The PSA’s Monthly Ranking Trials were also held back-to-back with Macau Llimination Trials.

Day 1 saw Daenniel start well finishing 1st place in Race 1 and finishing in 3rd place overall in the International Optimist Class, while our PGYC Laser sailor, Khim Ashley Albo, also in Manila for the Ranking Trails, finished in 1st place in her heat in the International Laser 4.7 Class. Final placings at the end of the weekend saw Raya improving her overall National ranking in Optimist Class to 5th place overall, while Daenniel finished in 4th place and Ashley also ranked 4th overall in the Laser 4.7 Class.

Manila Bay lived up to its reputation with inconsistent, light to moderate winds, periods of heavy rain and a short, a choppy swell creating challenging sailing conditions for the 24 young sailors taking part in the weekend’s double event races.

Next month the annual PGYC SBP All Souls Regatta 2024 takes place in Puerto Galera on October 26-27, and PSA will be sending a PSA team to join the regatta, along with dinghy crews from other Philippine sailing clubs and associations. The SBP regatta will be followed by the annual Royal Cargo ASR2024 on November 1-3. This year the PGYC All Souls Regatta is celebrating its 20th Anniversary and is the both longest running and largest annual yacht race held in the Philippines and will bring yachts and racing crews from all over the Philippines and overseas to Puerto Galera for this exciting three-day event,

As part of the Puerto Galera Yacht Club Inc. (PGYC) and Philippine Sailing Association (PSA) Joint Training Program, PSA National Dinghy Coach, Mario Malazarte, was back in Puerto Galera last weekend to put the young sailors of PGYC’s Small Boat Program (SBP)  through their paces and sharpen their skills for the upcoming Ladies Helm Championships to be held in Manila on September 7-8 and ongoing monthly PSA Ranking Trials. PGYC will send three teams made up of their best lady helms and crew to compete next weekend, and to date have managed to finish at the top of the placings in the Ranking Trails in their class. The ranking trials determine the top sailors for selection to represent the Philippines as part of the National Team competing in overseas regattas and events.

Last weekend 20 of the SBP young sailors attended Coach Mario’s classes in intermediate  and advanced dinghy sailing skills and tactics in both the International Optimist and Mirror/Lawin classes.

We are privileged to have Coach Mario help us and special thanks for Coach Mario making the long trip to form Manila for the weekend. The PGYC SBP is recognised at National level as being the most successful club in producing top level sailors and for introducing local children to the sport. Well done to all.

September 02, 2024

I see Philippines National Dinghy Coach Mario is in Puerto Galera for his scheduled monthly SBP Training  Weekend, and we have three SBP teams heading to Manila to compete in the PSA Championships this coming September 6,7,8 (I am sending-sponsoring Capt. Tabo to tag along and help with mentoring etc). Big congrats to all for their wonderful ongoing sailing efforts. The SBP ASR2024  regatta is also not far off now on November 26 – 27.

I am told that the great new initiative and first in series – ‘Smokehouse Sunday’ (curated by ‘Not-Just-Coffee’ eatery, out along the Sabang Road) went off a treat on Sunday, September 01, and was well patronized, despite the weather (will give it a whirl when back in PG for sure)The Wednesday ‘Pie Night’ also continues to be well patronized (even lovely apple pies coming on stream too I see – yummmy)…big congrats to the 2024 Board.

SY ALLUSIVE: stainless work done – pics, new Raymarine system going in and extra 2x sets of sheet winches being installed now, and soon also heading for a final haul-out, to install a dyneema bowsprit bobstay tang and anti-foul job – including SpeedProp application, ahead of the delivery trip to Puerto Galera at month’s end / early Oct 2024 (fingers crossed to get back in time for the ASR2024 – very tight though).

Dutch cruising yacht ‘Crystal’, with owner Michal Palczynski aboard, are on their way to Puerto Galera from Indonesia and scheduled to arrive this week. I hope our recent Typhoon Enteng didn’t spoil the trip!

Americas Cup #37: it has been enthralling to watch each night – Kiwis won the preliminary regatta and the round-robins going on now, with (Italy) Luna Rossa in the lead at this stage (excluding NZ, as they go through as the Defender anyways).

PGYC moorings 11 August 2024

The weather has been ‘up and down like a yo-yo’, as they say – with bouts of high wind and dense rain, followed by brilliant sunshine etc…the ambient temperature is very nice at present though.

The Muelle Moorings – usual pic attached, remains relatively buoyant (no pun intended). Recent arrivals have been ‘E PUR SI MOUVE’ crewed by the ??? family and the big catamaran, ‘NUVOLA’.

Rick / ‘NEPTUNIS’ and John & Carolyn / ‘NERISSA’ did a fun sail together mid-week, with ‘NEPTUNIS’ returning home in the afternoon and ‘NERISSA’ anchoring overnight – out from Freddy’s at Hondura Beach (we couldn’t join this time, due to engine seal change-out).

Our new ‘ASR VIBER Group’ (boat owners), proactively initiated by our Sailing Director, Peter Steven, is now seeing a respectable spread of boat bookings coming in now for the 2024 ASR. Be sure to join us for the Philippines longest and still largest annual sailing event November 1-3, 2024. For more information email clubhouse@pgyc.org.

Small Boat Program dinghy sailing lessons in Puerto Galera

Great to see the our SBP kids out practicing and racing hard each Saturday, with our very talented sailors going away for PSA training and selection process (Korea may be coming up I hear in the wind) – big congrats to Peter Stevens and SBP Supervisor, Marvic, and Capt. Tabo acting as SBP Instructor at present.

The live-aboard folks recounted tonight at the R’n’R that they had a really great night at the Club recently (around 15 people there). Toots is also doing Sunday Roast again, at Dulangan nowadays with quite a respectable turn-out last Sunday, but no mint sauce though.

My new boat ‘ALLUSIVE’ is still coming along well in Langkawi, with new anchor bow roller on now to allow room for the new spinnaker bowsprit-prodder. Tons of work to go though (very tight schedule to make the ASR / BPI Signature Series in Nov 2024).

My partner, Louren is plowing right  into taking over and re-branding ‘SV COLUMBUS’, with her new venture, ‘OCEAN ADVENTURE CLUB’ (https://web.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063478729452): at  ‘Sandbar’, Carlos Garcia & family have gratefully made the mooring concrete blocks (I bought the chain and all fittings from the Club – PhP50.9K), as well as taking care of the administrative side of things, and will lay the mooring, ahead of ALLUSIVE arriving in PG and onto my C2 Mooring – Louren will then move COLUMBUS over to her new Sandbar mooring with the other charter boats there.

Louren is also actively looking for a sailing PARAW to purchase, to complement her new operation this coming high season.

Racing around the world getting interesting in the coming months: ‘8mR world championship’ in Scotland during Aug 2024, ‘J Class’ Regatta in Barcelona with the ‘America’s Cup’ program during Oct 2024 and the America’s Cup – opening ceremony will be held in Barcelona on the 22nd of August 2024. Locally, our PGYC ASR on 1-3 Nov 2024 and start of Season2 BPI Signature Series starts with Corregidor on 14 Nov 2024 (final overall results from BPI Season1 also attached). Going to be a big time and a ton of fun.

That’s all this week folks… JQ
