The PGYC Small Boat Program
The Puerto Galera Yacht Club has trained more than 1000 sailing school students since 2005 when we started the PGYC Small Boat Program. Six students have since been recruited by the Philippine Sailing Association where they have gone on to win bronze, silver and gold medals for the Philippines, in Australia, Ireland, Macau, Malaysia and Singapore.
In February 2023 Team-Puerto Galera - a group of eight PGYC Small Boat Program sailors - traveled to Taal Lake and entered the Philippine Oz-Goose National Championship along with 32 other young sailors from sailing clubs around the country and including from the PSA. Although they had never sailed an Oz-Goose dinghy before the event and with wind gusting up to 20 knots on the water, with just one-day of practice, Team-Puerto Galera sailed away with five of the nine trophies up for grabs, including 1st Overall and 1st Ladies-helm.
It annual cost of the PGYC Small Boat Program run to around US$30,000, excluding any out-of-town travel, this money comes mostly from profits from big-boat sailing regattas and from donations from Members and Friends of PGYC.
We want to expand the scope for donations so that we can send more of our sailing graduates to national and international events to win gold; you can help.
Our sailing instructors are home-grown, meaning that they have all started as students on the basic course, and when they have shown talent and interest they have been mentored to embrace all aspects of competition and safety. But, we need to further expand our training to bring it to an international level. For this we need either RYA or IYT membership so that we can offer internationally recognized certifications. This will increase our annual budget requirements by around US$14,000 equivalent, but will also dramatically increase the Program's potential revenue as we would be the only sailing school in the Philippines offering internationally recognized sailing certification.
The Puerto Galera Yacht Club is a non-stock, non-profit organization and as such we can receive donations and support from individuals, corporations and institutions; you will receive an official receipt that makes your donation fully tax deductible. Just tell us where to send the receipt . . .
You can donate via online bank transfer through BPI or PNB; you can also donate via GCash.

Why Support PGYC Sailing School?
Since 2005 the PGYC Small Boat Program has offered free basic sailing lessons to all Puerto Galera schools and to the child care organization Stairway Foundation Inc.. If students want to go on to learn more then that is offered free of charge as well provided students donate their time on weekends to assist in boat cleaning, maintenance and preparing the boats for other students.
Why support? Because we give more children more opportunity in an environmentally friendly sport than any other Philippine sailing school.
How Good Is The Sailing Training?
The quality of the sailing training, based on the RYA curriculum, is first class as demonstrated by our student's medal haul. Of particular note is that the skills they learn at PGYC equip them for sailing on almost any type of yacht. Many of the graduates from the PGYC sailing school have been sought after by the crew-chiefs of international racing yachts, where they are now employed in places such as Australia and Hong Kong as well as here in the Philippines. We mentioned the Oz Goose Championships earlier: our students had never seen an Oz Goose until one day before the Championships but that did not stop them adapting their skills & learning, and winning big!

What Could The Future Hold?
The PGYC Small Boat Program has proven that quality training can encourage the youth of the Philippines to excel at international level. Every week the PGYC receives inquiries from interested individuals looking or an international certificate for learning to sail. If we had an RYA or IYT qualified instructor and a club certification from RYA or IYT then we could offer this and the income from paying students would help fund the Small Boat Program from generated revenues. To gain certification from RYA or IYT costs around US$6,000. Can you help us fund these certifications?
Because of our successes, every year the PGYC is invited to enjoin with sailing events in the Philippines and around Asia but the PGYC and the Small Boat Program cannot afford all of the travel expenses alone. Travel expenses for a group of six student sailors and a mentor to Philippine events typically cost around USD1,500 equivalent; and, international travel expenses to Asian destinations typically costs US$5-7,000. Can help us fund these travel expenses?
The Puerto Galera Yacht Club is possibly the smallest yacht club in the Philippines but has proven that size does not matter when it comes to excellence in training.
Please help us to make the Philippines a real player on the international sailing stage by supporting our sailing programs now.
